Jerry HunterPresident’s Message

Jerry Hunter, EBEA President

BCIT – The Next Generation

I am happy to welcome each of you back to another school year.  With the opening of school comes the annual challenge of mem-orizing names of students, learning new technology, developing new courses, and staying a step ahead of our students.  What was considered “new” last June when school ended has quickly become “old” by the time school starts in the fall.

For some of us, these challenges are met through participation in professional state, regional, and national conferences, attending EBEA’s summer computer camp, enrolling in college courses, reading professional journals, searching for information online, and participating in blogs, wikis, twitter, and other social networking sites online.

The days of beginning a new school year expecting nothing new to be added to our plate are long gone; and as professional business educators, we must each step up to the plate eager to prepare our students with the latest skills and facilitate their mastery of technology that relates to our field of business and computer education.

This past summer, EBEA sponsored our first annual Computer Camp.  Participants from New York, Massachusetts, and Maine spent a week in South Portland, Maine, immersing them in the latest technology while sharing with each other, ideas and strategies for current and new courses.  In November, EBEA will hold its Annual Convention in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Business Education Association and their annual convention in Grantville, PA.  Whether you drive to the Hershey area or fly into the Harrisburg airport, this convention is one that you cannot afford to miss!  The convention will have a strong focus on technology while at the same time offering concurrent sessions that meet the needs of business educators that do not work with technology as well.  In addition, EBEA members will be voting on our proposed changes to our Bylaws at our annual business meeting on November 20.

Both traditional and hands-on computer sessions will be offered.  Technology sessions will include Adobe Photoshop CS4, Flash CS4, Dreamweaver CS3, Scratch, Creating Safe On-Line Identities, SAM 2007, and Web 2.0 Tools.   Other session topics and their descriptions will be appearing soon on both our website, www.ebea.info as well as on PBEA’s website at www.pbea.info.

The registration deadline has been extended until November 9, 2009, due to issues with bulkmailing our newsletter.

EBEA Computer Camp

August 3-7, 2009

Eight campers, led by four  instructors - Jerry Hunter (EBEA President), Sara Sutter and Alice Barr (Certified Google Apps Specialists), and Drew McNeely (SMART Board Trainer) spent an entire week immersing themselves into the latest technology that they hope to be using in their own classrooms during the coming year.  A special thanks goes to Edwina Kaliku (Cengage Rep for Maine, Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire) for providing each camper with a huge assortment of the latest technology-related textbooks dealing with Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Flash CS4, Century 21 Accounting (9th edition including the use of Aplia Online Working Papers), Google Apps Course Notes, etc.

Day 1 -- After a roundtable discussion on what each camper taught for courses in their own schools and what they each hoped to learn during the camp, they spent the majority of the first day learning to use Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Day 2 -- More detailed instruction with Photoshop was conducted.  The day was hot and humid so we went for a spontaneous field trip to the Portland Headlight ... the world's most photographed lighthouse.   Each camper was given a digital camcorder and a digital camera and given an assignment of taking a variety of video and still images.   Upon their return to the high school, EBEA members were then taught how to do a project which included images that they had photographed earlier in the day.

Day 3 -- Another hot and humid day was forecasted in Maine.  We had two guest instructors - Sara Sutter and Alice Barr - who provided instruction on Google Apps ... We spent the morning covering Google E-mail, Google Docs, Forms, Spreadsheets, Presentation, Google Sites, Google Maps, Blogger, iGoogle, Google Reader, and Search (Wheel and squares) and completed the day with a Web 2.0 Smackdown!   For lunch we enjoyed Maine lobster and corn on the cob.

EBEA Computer CampersDay 4 --Guest instructor, Drew McNeely, spent approximately 1 1/2 hours providing instruction on how to use a SMART Board.   We then moved to the Video Production classroom where we learned to create a video of the Portland Headlight footage from Tuesday using iMovie.  After lunch we then covered wikis, blogs, twitter, learned about SKYPE, and shared tips on using search engines including bing.com.  Our group enjoyed a night dining together in Portland at a Thai restaurant.

Day 5 -- Today was the final day of our week-long camp.   In the morning, Jerry provided each camper with a certificate that he/she may use with his/her school for recertification.  We then spent time on Microsoft Photostory 3, MS Office 2007, and Adobe Dreamweaver CS4.

The camp was extremely successful.   The small group setting allowed participants to receive detailed instruction while at the same time feeling free to branch out in areas specifically interesting to them.  We are hoping to offer the camp again next summer.  Watch our website (www.ebea.info) this winter for details on our 2010 Computer Camp!

2009 EBEA Educator-of-the-Year Award

Criteria and Nomination Procedures

Excellence in business education is alive and well in the schools and colleges. Too often, however, business educators are too humble to “spread the word” about the innovative strategies in place in their classrooms and departments. That humility goes even a step further when it comes to gaining recognition for themselves and the work that they do as part of their professional careers.

All EBEA members are acquainted with an outstanding educator, whether it is a colleague or a mentor. Now is the time to seek recognition for that educator for his/her outstanding contributions to business education by nominating eligible recipients in the three following categories for the 2009 EBEA Educator-of-the-Year Awards:

Professional Development Opportunity

The National Business Education Association (NBEA) is in the process of updating the National Standards for Business Education and is in need of business education teachers to serve as reviewers.  This will be the fourth edition of the national standards with a publication date of spring 2011.

As a member of the NBEA Administrative Curriculum Committee, I have been asked to forward to the national office the names of 25 business educators who would be willing to serve as reviewers for this important document.  I have chosen you because of your expertise and overall understanding of the business education curriculum.  I hope I can include your name on my list.

In January/February 2010,  if you are chosen by NBEA to serve as a reviewer, you will be sent an electronic and hard copy of the standards section(s) you were willing to review (Accounting, Business Law, etc), and a feedback form to complete consisting of four questions.  You will be given approximately two weeks to complete the review process.  This process consists of reviewing the section(s), keeping in mind these questions:

  • ü  Are the major sections in the (Accounting, Business Law, etc) section still appropriate or do they need to be changed or deleted?
  • ü  Are the titles designated by roman numerals stated correctly?
  • ü  Do the performance expectations still apply or do they need to be changed, updated, or deleted?

The review process should take no longer than two (2) hours.  The content area sections of the national standards are:

  • ü  Accounting
  • ü  Business Law
  • ü  Career Development
  • ü  Communication
  • ü  Economics and Personal Finance
  • ü  Entrepreneurship
  • ü  Information Technology
  • ü  International Business
  • ü  Management
  • ü  Marketing
  • ü  Mathematical Analysis (formerly Computation)

As business educators, our mission is to prepare students for the workplace by teaching them the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed.  I hope you can assist NBEA and me in this important project.  Please say “yes” to have your name considered as a reviewer by completing the attached form and returning it to me by November 13, 2009.

Should you have questions, contact me.  I look forward to receiving your completed form on or before November 13, 2009.  Enjoy the rest of the fall weather.  I hope to see you at PBEA in Grantville, PA, November 19 & 20.

PS  If you cannot help with this project, do you know of someone who can?  If the individual is willing, send me his/her information to forward to the national office.  I am also in need of business people to serve as reviewers.  If you know of any, please send me their information.
